Dry January 2025

I made it through a month of stark sobriety. Here are some things I accomplished.

  • I made this blog! It was so easy! This brings me closer to my next step of creating the band website
  • Finally fixed the grill door lock, which had been broken for months
  • Started sleep apnea treatment with a CPAP machine
  • Got more proactive at managing my blood pressure. Went back on losartan, started tracking my BP again. Unfortunately, my BP device died and it took me awhile to order another one, which still sits in a box in my office after a week. It's on the top of my TODO list, however
  • Got better at keeping a TODO list. Seriously, I just put the BP thing on the top of the list. I'm getting better about writing these random things down, rather than have them appear in and out of my thoughts like ghosts and nag at me and never get done
  • Put new LED lights on my bass drum, something I'd put off for months since the last set died on me
  • Finally fixed an issue with my drum trigger setup where the volume was not loud enough in my new drum monitor. Could still be better, but it's much improved now with a simple tweak to a setting within the drum module
  • Read a book! Set a goal to read at least 1 book a month. Granted, it was an anthology of Peanuts cartoons 😂. But hey! It's a start, right? Better than ZERO books, which is where I've been at for months, even years. Next month is a "real" book, though, I swear: The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner.
  • Played drums more outside of regular band practices, kept my chops up. Re-familiarized myself with my trigger setup and started more active planning for what to use where in what songs.
  • Began looking into my 401Ks a little closer, which an eye towards retirement planning.
  • Finally took my car in for a recall and overdue maintenance

I'm probably missing some other little things along the way. The point is, it was a good month for gettin' shit done. I also really rather enjoyed having a more clear mind day-to-day, and just feeling better over all. I might've been a little moodier than usual now and then. And towards the last week of the month, I was getting a little anxious and... thirsty haha. But over all, it was not that difficult to do, and the benefits were many.

Yesterday, I did enjoy 2 delicious glasses of beer at the Little Miss Brewing Company in Lakeside before I did some grocery shopping. They were amazing!

I will say that they really dragged me down for the rest of the day, however. I crashed out for a nap shortly after getting home, and when I woke from that I was irritable and feeling low-grade shitty. Hungover, essentially, from 2 measly beers! 😂 Was it worth it? Yeah, it was. Is it worth it enough to drink every day? Certainly not. Every week? I'm not even so sure it is, now...

...anyways, cheers! 🍻
